On Mornings
ON MORNINGS is a six-part storytelling series published on Medium, created in partnership with HITRECORD. Read & listen to the full series:
Origins
I’ve always been interested in mornings. Everyone’s morning routine is specific to them, their quirks and habits as unique as a signature. It’s intimate. Even the people you share a house, an apartment, a room, a bed with won’t know all the details. Your morning routine is personal, often private. There is an element of mystery there that is alluring to me.
Production
The aim was to create a series of podcasts and first-person essays revealing people’s morning routines. I was the director of the project, working in partnership with Medium and HITRECORD.
HITRECORD is a collaborative production company – it provides a platform for anyone with an internet connection to participate in the creative process. Once we had the theme and the structural concept in place, we asked the community on hitrecord.org to contribute storytelling, music, and illustration.
As stories from all over the world came in, we saw the connective tissue start to emerge. We used those threads of connection to curate stories into distinct topics related to the morning. Some topics were ones we expected (The Bed, Alarm Clocks), but there were also some surprises. One was Half-Awake – that topic came about because of all the great stories that were submitted about that liminal, almost indefinable space between sleep and wake.
What We Made
The final series became six podcasts with six nonfiction companion pieces.
The topics for the seres are THE BED, ALARM CLOCKS, NOCTURNAL MORNINGS, MEDICINE CABINET, MORNING COMPANIONS, and HALF-AWAKE.
I’m so proud of this work and everyone who came together to bring it to life. Read, listen, & enjoy!
